If the name Tom Shadyac doesn’t ring a bell, it should. He directed some of our favorite Jim Carrey movies in the 90’s as well as one memorable Eddie Murphy movie. You’d think he’d be happy. Instead of reveling in his success, he’s given up all worldly possessions and filmed a socially conscious documentary.
Director Tom Shadyac was living the dream as the A-List director of cash cows like Ace Ventura: Pet Detective, The Nutty Professor and Liar Liar. Then, after surviving a near-fatal bike accident, Shadyac adopted a completely new perspective on life. He sold his house and moved into a mobile home, got out of Hollywood, and gave away a large amount of his money. Now, he’s directed the documentary I am, which purports to examine what’s wrong with the world and what we can do to change it.
This guy had an epiphany, man. You can’t have a line as great as “Finkle is Einhorn. Einhorn is Finkle.” in one of your movies and expect the high to carry you for the rest of your life. For me, that line would easily make me happy for about 15 years.
Anyways, good on Shadyac for searching for something deeper. Not many people can give up a Malibu mansion. That takes some serious inner strength. I’m not even willing to share my breakfast.
No, you can’t have a piece of my parfait.
