Or is it I couldn’t care less? It doesn’t matter. The awards are happening and I’m overwhelmingly ‘meh’ about it (oxymoron, I’m aware). It’s enough for me to get riled up when the Oscars nominate anything and get it wrong. The last thing I need is to get my blood boiling over the Golden Globes, an award show that the industry hardly pays attention to.
Donald Glover, also known as Childish Gambino, Troy from Community, and former writer for 30 Rock, performed to a sold-out crowd at the hipster haven, Slim’s in San Francisco. He gave us a mix of his stand-up comedy and then followed it up with a concert of his hip-hop songs that have been making its rounds on the internet. Here are ten things I took note of at the show.
Community, a show that I have defended all throughout this blog, has been picked by Emily Nussbaum of New York Magazine as this year’s best television show, beating out stellar dramas, like Mad Men and Boardwalk Empire, as well as quality sitcoms like Louie and 30 Rock. Yesterday, we posted the link of Tina Fey winning the Mark Twain award for American Humor. The event took place at the Kennedy Center but Alec Baldwin was nowhere to be found. But he did take the time out of his busy schedule to record this video of him as Mark Twain congratulating Tina on the award.
It also means that a very forgetful studio executive is not getting fired. NBC has renewed 30 Rock for another season and Parks and Recreation is returning from its hiatus. That gives us 6 shows that NBC can’t fit into a 2-hour bloc. Instead of spreading their shows throughout the week, NBC is thinking about a 3-hour line up of comedy.
NBC got a big ratings boost from last night’s live episode of 30 Rock. That means a bump for the shows that preceded it and followed it, including Community.
